Dual World Cup winning Wallaby Tim Horan will headline this year’s MBAlive! Brisbane roadshow and provide insights into how his decision to pursue an EMBA helped make the transition from the change room to the boardroom.
The former Australian captain who played for this country on 80 occasions completed his EMBA at Bond University in 2014. He was recently appointed Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand for UK-based fund manager River and Mercantile, overseeing more than $1 billion of funds. He joined the firm from Westpac where he headed the sports and entertainment business in Private and Premium Banking for more than seven years.
Horan will headline nearly three hours of talks, panels and presentations at the inaugural MBAlive! event at Fishburners (Level 3, 155 Queen Street) in the Brisbane CBD on September 7.
The free event is specifically designed for executives, entrepreneurs and anyone else looking to give their career and salary boost with an MBA.
The Brisbane event includes an all-day MBA Course Fair (9.00am-5.00pm), Horan’s keynote address (11.00am), an all-female Q&A panel with top MBA students and presentations from leading business schools including QUT, University of Queensland, Griffith University, Australian Institute of Management, Australian National University (ANU), UTS and University of Sydney.
Horan believes the EMBA was instrumental in building his knowledge and understanding of business and taking his corporate career to the next level.
“If you had asked me before my studies if I would prefer to tackle an Executive MBA or Jonah Lomu from the All Blacks, my answer would have been very different to what it is today – now I’d say give me Lomu any day,” Horan said. “It was certainly a challenge, but well worthwhile.”
Despite managing a range of commercial commitments while undertaking his studies, Horan impressed enough to be afforded the honour of delivering the valedictory speech at his graduation.
“When I was approached to give a speech on graduation day, I almost declined thinking I simply didn’t have the time to prepare,” he said.“But then when it was explained to me that I was being asked to give the valedictorian speech – I was speechless.
